The Small-Town State Park in Tennessee Locals Want to Keep to Themselves

Did you know there's a small-town state park in Tennessee only minutes from some of the state's most famous tourist attractions? Seven Islands State Birding Park is a big surprise to many tourists.

Did you know there's a small-town state park in Tennessee located in the shadows of some of the most famous locations in the Volunteer State? When I visit the state, I tend to concentrate my time in the eastern part — that's where you'll find my beloved Dollywood, the spectacular shopping and dining in Gatlinburg, and of course, the majestic Great Smoky Mountains National Park, one of the most beautiful spots in the United States.

But only a half-hour drive away from the bustling tourist scene of Sevier County, you'll find Seven Island State Birding Park — one of the newest state parks in Tennessee, and one of its best-kept secrets. This peaceful retreat, spanning 425 acres, was founded in 2014 and offers one of the most unique and relaxing atmospheres of any state park in the region. Hiking over bridges to see the largest collection of birds in the area and taking in majestic views of the area's landmarks, you'll feel a million miles away from the hustle and bustle of the Smokies — and sometimes, on a crowded summer day, that might be just the ticket for the perfect day.

Why This Small-Town State Park Stands Out in Tennessee

Seven Islands State Birding Park is located along the French Broad River and is known around the region for being one of the best spots for bird-watching in the south. That's because the park is home to over 180 species of birds, ranging from the common marsh wren to colorful birds like the summer tanager. The birds vary by season, but no matter when you come, you'll be able to see some of the regular residents at this underrated state park in Tennessee.

What You'll Experience at Seven Islands State Birding Park

The park's signature feature is the Bluebird Barn, one of the rustic historic barns that dot the park. This one has been converted into the park's visitors' center, featuring educational displays on the history of the park and the region. This is usually where you'll meet for any organized activities hosted by the park, usually centered around birdwatching. These barns are another reason this park is considered a true hidden gem in Tennessee.

The newest feature at the park is its extended pedestrian bridge, which spans the French Broad River and offers stunning water views. This is an accessible bridge as well, and is seen as part of the park's seven easy hiking trails. The park is one of the most accessible in Tennessee, with little elevation gain unless you choose to tackle some of the larger rolling hills.

Local Tips for Visiting

The park is open year-round, but if you'd like to see it at its best, you'll want to visit during the mid-summer to the first fall frost — that's when the Zinnias are in full bloom, turning much of the park into a stunning display of color. There's plenty of free parking near the park, making this an easy one to visit, and we have good news for fishing fans — the rivers are a great spot to catch bass or bluegill.

What to Know Before You Go

The park is open from 7 AM to 6 PM daily, so it's definitely a daytime park. That's when the birds are out, after all. We recommend coming early, as the views of the Great Smoky Mountains as the sun is rising are truly stunning. As with any birding park, visitors are encouraged to come with a camera, keep a healthy distance from the birds, and snap some amazing photos!
