This Tennessee Landscape Turns Into a Serene Frozen Wonderland During Winter
Frozen waterfalls in Tennessee can be tricky to find, but when the temperatures drop head to the Cherokee National Forest to see this amazing natural beauty.
We have some pretty amazing waterfalls in Tennessee, but it can be hard to time it just right to find frozen waterfalls in Tennessee. That just makes them even more special when you finally come across one, and let me tell you, Margarette Falls is one of the prettiest waterfalls in the Cherokee National Forest. So keep an eye on the forecast and then have your hiking boots ready because this is one natural wonder you will not want to miss.
Even if you have seen this incredible waterfall in the lush greenery of the summer, it is worth exploring again in the winter. The forest takes on a whole new look and feel as you trade flourishing plant life for crunchy snow underfoot and stunning frozen icicles. The first part of the trail is a wide rocky path that just looks stunning, with a fresh layer of snow covering it.
Soon after that, the trail narrows a bit as you traverse wooden bridges, stairs, and the mountainous forest. For most of the trail, you will be following along to a bubbling brook, which you will cross a couple of times along elevated bridges and stepping stones. I had a lot of fun during this hike, but during the winter months, I would suggest bringing along some hiking poles. When it's icy, things can get a little slippery, especially in the steeper portions of the trail.
I would also recommend downloading the Margarette Falls map from AllTrails to keep with you while you hike. The trail intersects with a few other trails within the Cherokee National Forest, so having the map will help you stay on course. Along the way, you will see many rock walls where dripping water will freeze,e making the journey seem magical.

Before long, you will arrive at a dead end at the waterfall, and this is the perfect reward for trekking through the cold. Depending on the weather, you never know what this natural wonder will look like, which makes for an exciting reward at the end of the hike. The cascading nature of this fall makes it perfect for a picturesque wall of frozen beauty. Braving the cold and traveling through the snow can be hard, but trust me, it is all worth it once you get to this amazing waterfall.
When it comes to chasing frozen waterfalls in Tennessee, Margarette Falls is a great choice. I loved this hike when I did it and would be happy to go back and do it all over again. East Tennessee hosts some of the best outdoor beauty within the whole state, so if you want to pair this hike with another one, I would recommend visiting Buffalo Mountain. It is located in Johnson City and will offer some fantastic views of the city and the surrounding farmland, not to mention the gorgeous mountains in the distance.
