The Great Smoky Mountains may just be one of the most enchanting places in all of the world. Lush green overgrowth in the summer creates a beautiful jungle, while the fall bursts forth with fiery colors. There is always more to discover when you spend time in this incredible national park. We know of an easy waterfall trail in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, that's hiding in plain sight and teeming with natural beauty. It is a great addition to any busy day spent in the Smokies.
You can start this journey at the ever-popular Sugarlands Visitor Center in Gatlinburg.
A short drive into the Smokies and you are sure to already see the beauty of the forest and the mountains all around you. The visitor center is a great place to talk to knowledgeable ranchers, get maps, and just explore. When you finish, walk behind the building and enter the path leading into the woods.
There are a few trails intertwining around the area, so if you want to see Cataract Falls, then you can follow the convenient signs placed at most of the crossroads to other trails. It is fairly easy to find your way, but it also could be handy to have a map ready just in case.
The level gravel path will wind through the trees and follow a peaceful-sounding stream. You will be able to cross bridges, walk on a couple of boardwalks, and marvel at the simple beauty of the Great Smoky Mountains.
The hike will take you just over a mile, and other than a staircase, the path is very even and simple. This will give you a chance to relax and listen to the sounds of the trickling water or the singing birds as you walk.
Once you arrive, you will be greeted by the stunning 25-foot waterfall.
The wet jagged rocks glisten in the misting water and create a dark contrast to the clear falling water. The rocks also split the falls into a couple of different cascades, creating a beautiful display.
The picturesque waterfall paired with a very easy hike makes this a must-see location when you are exploring the Smokies. If you plan on packing a weekend full of hiking, add this one to your list for a simple way to get outside and enjoy the reward of Cataract Falls.
