Get in the Summer Spirit With a Visit to Rutherford’s Farm in Tennessee
Strawberry season is just the start of this family-operated farm's lineup of seasonal produce.
Few things signify summer like picking berries on a farm. If you haven't had the chance to enjoy this simple yet profound experience, we'd encourage you to plan a trip to Rutherford's Farm in Maryville, Tennessee—and quickly! Strawberry season is in full swing and won't last much longer. But don't fret if you've missed the window; Rutherford's Farm grows all kinds of delightful produce, making it a wonderful destination throughout summer and early autumn.
Rutherford's Farm began in 1976 as a small family business. Steve Rutherford was inspired to start a farm that would bring visitors the same cherished experience that he'd had, picking fresh strawberries with his grandparents as a young boy. During the spring of that first year, 3,000 strawberry plants were planted by hand on less than half an acre. Today, Rutherford's Farm isn't just a thriving strawberry farm; it's a five-acre farm with a dozen additional crops that thrive on the farm between April and November.
Now, for almost 50 years, visitors from Tennessee and beyond have included a trip to Rutherford's Farm as a beloved annual tradition. And let me tell you: folks rave about these berries. They're a bit smaller than your typical strawberry, but they are packed with flavor and sweetness and, at $2 per pound, are refreshingly affordable. Strawberries are perhaps what the farm is most famous for, but that's just the beginning of this farm's delicious offerings.
After strawberry season has concluded, the farm sees a delightful lineup of fresh crops, starting with beets and followed by broccoli, cabbage, and a few varieties of lettuce. In early July, it's string bean and tomato season. But the season doesn't end with the summer; by Halloween, visitors can look forward to sweet potatoes and four different varieties of fresh greens.
And while the quality of produce sets this farm apart, it's the genuine hospitality that will inspire you to return each year—or multiple times in the same season! The owners will make you feel right at home, with tips for getting the best produce and some entertaining stories along the way.
One thing to know before you go: Rutherford's Farm is cash only, so be sure to plan accordingly! You'll also want to bring your own bucket, or you can purchase one at the farm for $1. A recent review highlights not only the quality of the produce, but also the unforgettable experience:
"Such a lovely little family-friendly farm, the owners, staff, and everyone there are so nice, friendly, and knowledgeable. The strawberries are delicious, the broccoli is delicious, we just love coming here and picking berries with our kids, not to mention the price is unbeatable, 6.5 pounds of berries for a fraction of what it would cost at a grocery store. We absolutely love it here."
