8 Trails In South Dakota You Must Take If You Love The Outdoors
These trails in South Dakota will lead you to stunning views you never knew existed in our state. You honestly won't believe your eyes!
1. Cathedral Spires Trail
This 5 mile, out and back, trail is beautiful and highly recommended by those who have hiked it. The hike is considered moderate to strenuous but the views are totally worth it.
2. Castle Trail
Castle Trail is near Rapid City and is a 5 mile point to point trail. This skill level is easy but the trail itself can be pretty muddy. Get out and enjoy the unique views this trail has to offer and explore the Badlands up close and personal.
3. Lost Cabin - Harney Peak Loop Trail
This 8.6 mile loop trail is a strenuous hike. We guarantee the views are worth it since you'll be hiking up the highest mountain peak east of the Rockies.
4. Flume Trail
Perfect for an all day hike or two day trek, this trail is 14 miles point to point. If you're a beginner, this simple trail is a great place to start.
5. Lovers' Leap Trail
This 4 mile loop trail offers the perfect chance to see bison along the way. The trail itself starts out strenuous and breaks way to offer a moderately difficult hike.
6. Rimrock Trail
Two loop trails combine to for Rimrock Trail. This 6.5 mile, moderately strenuous hike is usually a less busy trail, making for a peaceful hike.
7. Sunday Gulch Trail
This trail features 2.8 miles of waterfalls, ferns and cliffs. It's a great trail for all ages and loops you right back to where you started.
8. French Creek Natural Area
Last on our list is this 12 mile, full day hike. Great for your first overnight hiking trip if you want to make two days out of it. This trail features wild raspberry patches as well as poison ivy — be on the lookout for both for different reasons!
