6 Reasons South Dakota Surprisingly Has Some Of The Best Skiing In The Country
South Dakota offers affordable and less crowded skiing opportunities with beautiful resorts and additional activities.
When out-of-towners think of South Dakota, they think of Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse, and other landmarks we are known (and loved) for, but some of our biggest and best activities are often overlooked. From camping to hiking and fishing, there is no shortage of things to do outdoors here in the Mount Rushmore State, including the cold-weather favorite: skiing. Not sure why you should ski South Dakota? Here are six reasons why we have some of the best skiing opportunities in America:
1. Epic slopes
As we previously mentioned, SoDak is famous for our landmarks and historical attractions, but few non-natives realize that we also have amazing hills and mountains that are perfect for - you guessed it - skiing! The next time you want to hit the slopes, skip expensive Colorado, Wyoming, and Vermont, and treat yourself to a fun day in South Dakota!
2. Affordability
We feel the need to re-iterate that skiing can be super expensive, especially if you visit our neighbors to the south (a la Colorado and Wyoming). To put this point into perspective, the average Colorado day pass is $80.26, followed by Wyoming ($59.20), and then South Dakota ($45).
3. Fewer crowds
Which would you rather do: Bump into strangers and stand in long ski lift lines or get in as much time on the slopes as possible? If getting the most for your money is your choice, we will see you in SoDak.
4. Beautiful resorts
If you want easy access to the slopes, it is always wise to stay on-site, which you can do easily and affordably at places like the pictured Terry Peak Chalets.
5. More than just skiing
Do you want to make a weekend (or even week!) out of your visit? Most of our ski resorts offer more than just skiing, including tubing, freestyle-terrain areas, dining, and much more.
6. Events and specials galore
As if you needed another reason to visit, South Dakota's ski resorts also offer several unique events and specials, ranging from the $5 Frosty Frolics Tubing (Great Bear Ski Valley) to various concerts to film screenings and festivals.
