Just because it's cold and snowy doesn't mean that you can't still get out there and enjoy South Dakota's natural beauty. Take this pretty trail, where the scenery is even more breathtaking in the winter.
Spearfish Canyon is gorgeous when it's covered in a blanket of snow.
To get out and enjoy this winter wonderland, take the trail to Roughlock Falls. It's 2.1 miles, and only has a 242-foot elevation change, so it's rated easy for everyone.
If there's fresh snow, you might need snowshoes, but the trail gets enough traffic that the snow is generally packed down pretty well.
The trailhead starts at Spearfish Canyon Lodge, so if you do need to rent snowshoes, you can do so there.
Roughlock Falls is beautiful year-round, but in the winter, it's particularly enchanting.
When it's cold enough, the falls freeze.
