The Most Romantic Valentine’s Day Hike You’ll Find in South Dakota

Nestled in the Black Hills National Forest near Rapid City, you'll find one of the most romantic hikes in South Dakota: Creek Caves Trail. I know that might sound weird, but hear me out; hiking can be romantic, and many trails in South Dakota prove the point... especially this one. Creek Caves Trail is a beautiful respite from real life, and I think it's perfect for a nice couple's day out.

At just about two miles in length, this stunning hike shows off the splendor of the Black Hills, and in the winter, it can become a true wonderland. It gets mighty cold out here, though, so be sure to dress warmly and wear well-insulated, sturdy shoes that won't allow your feet to get wet. There are a few creek crossings, and ice can be present this time of year. Snow is also often present, so plan accordingly. I like to get clothing and gear from REI; it's affordable and highly helpful for those of us who adore the outdoors.

Despite the cold, hydration is very important, so make sure to pack plenty of drinking water. Just picture it: laying your head on your partner's shoulder while overlooking some of the most beautiful views in the state; exploring the frozen shores of the creek together, noticing every little detail the planet offers us this time of year; holding hands and pointing out the fascinating natural features you encounter along the way. You know, the good stuff.

For some, the trail might be the perfect backdrop for a marriage proposal.

The first portion of the hike is a downhill incline, so be ready to climb back up on the way back. The rock formations you'll spot along the way are absolutely gorgeous, and when they're covered in a layer of snow and ice, they're especially stunning.

My favorite part of the hike is the caves; the trail will lead you straight to them, and they make for an amazing adventure with your favorite human. You can explore them, and I think you'll fall in love with the landscape of South Dakota all over again.

This hike is rated as easy, but as I said, be ready to hike uphill for the second half of the adventure. It's challenging but not overly so - I find it incredibly enjoyable, and I think it's perfect for couples. It's one of my favorites to hike with my significant other, and it'll be yours, too.
