The Secret Garden Hike In South Dakota Will Make You Feel Like You’re In A Fairytale
Hell Canyon Trail in South Dakota offers a fairy tale-like hike with vibrant wildflowers, hidden caves, and stunning cliffs.
The flowers in South Dakota are blooming and now is the perfect time to get out and enjoy the vibrant sea of color they create! While you could walk through a botanic garden or past your neighbor's peony bush, we recommend taking this South Dakota secret garden hike that will make you feel like you're in a fairy tale:
One of the most scary sounding of South Dakota trails is in fact one the most beautiful, as demonstrated by the Hell Canyon Trail!
Located near Custer, Hell Canyon is a 5.6-mile trail that - though beautiful year round - takes on a new life come springtime.
What makes this Black Hills gem stand out from all the rest? It is thanks to its many natural wonders, like hidden caves...
...jaw-dropping cliffs and canyons...
...and - you guessed it - wildflowers galore.
As you may remember, Hell Canyon was severely damaged from the 2000 Jasper Fire, so seeing the incredible re-growth of the trees, flowers, and shrubs makes this secret garden hike all the more magical!
To access the Hell Canyon Trailhead, head to Custer and take Highway 16 south for 11 miles until you see a sign for both the trail and parking.
