Badlands National Park, with its big sky and incredible rock formations, really is like being transported to another world. Take a look at this enchanting hike.
Castle Trail is a 10.7 mile round-trip hike that takes you some of the most beautiful spots in Badlands National Park.
The trail is ranked as moderate. It's mostly level, but has a few more difficult sections.
You'll likely see wildlife along the way. Big horn sheep frequent this area and can often be seen right from the trail.
You'll also see birds...
...rabbits...
...and possibly rattlesnakes. Avoid snakes by staying on the trail and watch where you walk!
If you're hiking during spring and early summer, you'll find plenty of gorgeous, vibrant wildflowers.
The views are spectacular!
Can you see how this trail got its name? If you use your imagination a bit, you'll feel like you've returned to medieval times.
This trail is not typically crowded, so you might find some solitude, especially if you're hiking mid-week.
Thunderstorms here can be dangerous. If you see a storm approaching, descend from high points to avoid lightning strikes. The trail can become slippery when it's wet and muddy.
Before you head out on this hike, make sure you have plenty of water, a hat and some sunscreen. Most of the hike is in full sun exposure and it can get pretty hot. As always, tell someone when and where you're planning to hike.
