This Tiered Waterfall and Swimming Hole in South Dakota Must Be on Your Summer Bucket List

Discover one of the best swimming holes in South Dakota, tucked into the scenic Black Hills near Keystone with trails, a waterfall, and crystal-clear water.

It's time for South Dakotans to make their summer bucket list. Since there are so many things to see and do around the Mount Rushmore State when the weather turns warm, how does one choose? Well, we recommend cooling off in one of the best South Dakota swimming holes. While there are a few options around our beautiful state, there is one natural pool and waterfall near Keystone that may be one of our favorite summer destinations—Hippie Hole. Continue reading to learn why this hidden swimming hole in South Dakota must be on your summer bucket list this year.

Why Hippie Hole is One of the Best Swimming Holes in South Dakota

Hiding out near Keystone, the Hippie Hole is arguably the most beautiful swimming hole in the state, thanks to both the clear water and the surrounding Black Hills landscape. No matter where you look, you will find something that will make your jaw drop, including giant rock walls, shady trees, and a pristine waterfall. Plus, you will need to put on your hiking boots and tackle a short trail to reach the Hippie Hole, and the remote location helps keep crowds down when compared to other swimming holes.

Doesn't this look like the best place to spend a hot summer day? We are ready to jump in!

The Short Hike to Reach This Hidden Swimming Spot

While the swimming hole itself is reason enough to visit the Hippie Hole, the beautiful, yet short and sweet hike to the pool gives even more incentive. The Hippie Hole Trail begins just off Highway 40 east of Keystone and Harney. This is an out-and-back trail that is just over 1.5 miles, but don’t let the short distance fool you—it’s not an easy hike. This trail isn’t regularly maintained, there are rocky areas, and you must be prepared for some steep sections. In fact, you will climb nearly 500 feet on your journey. Also, in some areas, rock scrambling may even be required. Sturdy shoes are essential, and we recommend downloading a trail map before you go, in case you lose the trail.

However, if you are willing to put forth the work, the journey will be just as memorable as your time in the water. You will hike through beautiful green trees, experience gorgeous mountain views, and may even spot wildlife along your way. It’s the perfect summer adventure.

Best Times to Visit this South Dakota Swimming Hole

The best times to visit Hippie Hole are in July and August, when the cooler water feels extra refreshing after a steep hike. While this swimming hole and waterfall are more challenging to reach, we still recommend visiting on weekday mornings for the smallest crowds. In fact, if you time your visit just right, you may even find that you have the area all to yourself. Plus, by starting out in the morning, you will avoid hiking in extremely hot temperatures, and parking is much easier to find at the trailhead.

As with all South Dakota swimming holes, exercise caution when around the water. Be aware of the water depth and temperature before jumping in, bring plenty of water and snacks, and always make sure to pack out everything you brought in.

Yes, there are many destinations for your summer bucket list in the Mount Rushmore State, but this Black Hills swimming hole is one of our favorites. With a combination of a hike, a natural pool, and a small waterfall, it's the perfect place to enjoy a hot summer day. In fact, don't be surprised if you find yourself coming back here quite often throughout the warmer months.
