South Dakota's attractions and landmarks attract tourists during warmer months, but during the winter, many do not want to brave the cold and end up missing out on an often overlooked part of the Mount Rushmore State. While many sites deserve to be visited during the winter, one stands out as the most important, which is the Spearfish Community Caves:
Located in - you guessed it! - Spearfish, the Spearfish Community Caves are tucked away amidst the canyon, making for an attraction that many have yet to experience.
Known for its namesake waterfall, Spearfish is famous for its gorgeous landscape that consists of a stunning road, trails galore, and fishing, making the dramatic caves all-the-more surprising!
Also known as the Wildcat Caverns, the Spearfish Community Caves are comprised of several shallow small and large caves, making for a unique experience that the entire family will enjoy.
While one may think that visiting during warmer months may be the time to go, we recommend checking out the Community Caves during the winter, as the surrounding snow and ice make for a real-life winter wonderland.
The Spearfish Community Caves can be reached by a short 1/2-mile hike.
Please note: Due to a steep ascent and loose rocks, the hike to the Caves can be tricky at times, so practice caution when you go.
The Spearfish Community Caves can be accessed via Spearfish Canyon Scenic Byway (Hwy 14A), approximately 2.7 miles south of Colorado Blvd. Once you reach Mile Marker 13, take the curve, and you will find the parking lot and trail for the Caves.
