Where to Find the Best Dog-Friendly Trails in South Dakota

These fun, dog-friendly hikes belong on your list this year. Grab your furry bestie for these incredible adventures!

When I go hiking, I love greeting dogs on the trails. The loveable besties are always so excited to be outside frolicking and playing. Unfortunately, our furry pals aren’t allowed on all the hiking trails in South Dakota. But have no worries, I found several incredible treks that you and your four-legged buddy will absolutely love. From hikes with flowing creeks to those with spectacular views and easy waterfront walking paths, here are the best dog-friendly hikes in South Dakota for a fun adventure.

1. Split Rock Creek Trail - Garretson

  • Location: Palisades State Park
  • Length: 1.5 Miles
  • Difficulty/Other: Moderate. Kid-friendly. Dog off-leash in areas

Dogs will love this 1.5-mile hike inside Palisades State Park, especially since no leash is required in certain spots. Considered a moderate trek, Split Rock Creek Trail has slippery and steep areas, so I advise wearing sturdy hiking shoes here. While your pup splashes and plays in the creek, you can marvel at the jaw-dropping, fifty-foot-high quartzite rock cliffs and spires. This trek is kid-friendly, too, so bring the little ones along for this unique adventure.

2. Creek Caves Trail - Rapid City

  • Location: Black Hills National Forest
  • Length: 2.1 Miles
  • Difficulty/Other: Easy. Dog on leash. Limited Parking

You’ll be impressed with the jaw-dropping rock formations and hidden caves along Creek Caves Trail. True to its name, the two-mile out-and-back trail also has tranquil creeks with rocky beds, where you and your doggie can make a splash during the warmer months. Parking is limited here, so plan your hike early.

3. Black Elk Peak Via Trail 9 North - Hill City

  • Location: Black Elk Wilderness
  • Length: 9.4 Miles
  • Difficulty/Other: Challenging. Backpacking. Dog off-leash in areas.

You and your bestie can perch on top of the world on the Black Elk Peak Trail. This nine-mile trail is challenging, with rocky ridgelines and steep inclines, but the sweeping views from the top of Black Elk Peak are worth the trek. Plus, if you get lucky, you might see the mountain goats that live on the mountainside. Pack your camping gear and turn this hike into a backpacking overnight adventure.

4. River Lookout Loop - Sioux Falls

  • Location: Good Earth State Park
  • Length: 1.2 Miles
  • Difficulty/Other: Easy. Kid-friendly. Dog off-leash in areas. Accessible paths

My favorite hiking trails are short treks with plenty of rewards along the way. And that is especially true for the River Lookout Loop. This easy, breezy 1.2-mile loop trail is lined with pretty little wildflowers and multiple overlooks and has amazing views of the Big Sioux River, too. Located inside Good Earth State Park, the newest in South Dakota, this trail is accessible and great for kids, dogs, and moms with strollers.

5. Upper Spring Creek and Flume Trail Loop - Keystone

  • Location: Black Hills National Forest
  • Length: 3.1 Miles
  • Difficulty/Other: Moderate. Kid-friendly. Dog on leash.

As one of the best trails inside Black Hills National Forest, the Upper Spring Creek and Flume Trail Loop belongs on your list. You will love this moderately challenging but scenic trail that leads to flowing creeks, unique rock formations, abandoned tunnels, and the remains of the Rockerville Flume, which operated until 1885, transporting water and gold in the area. You and Fido should take some time to enjoy the creek crossings and Sheridan Lake. You might want to bring your water shoes for this three-mile hike.
