The Scenic Hike Through Wickaboxet Management Area In Rhode Island Winds Through A Lush Forest
A surefire way to eliminate stress, at least temporarily for me, is to spend some time in nature. That usually means finding a hiking trail that promises plenty of natural beauty and maybe even a bit of a challenge. This forest hike in Rhode Island certainly delivers, promising a little bit of everything - a tree-lined path, breathtaking views, an old cemetery, and even some obstacles (depending on how you look at it) along the way.
Journey deep into the forest at Wickaboxet Management Area in West Greenwich, an expansive natural space that spans nearly 700 acres, along the Wickaboxet Loop Trail from Saddle Rock Road.
The majority of the management area, which boasts several scenic hiking trails, is a forested area. A smaller portion is covered by wetlands.
Although it's considered both kid and dog-friendly, the 5.6-mile trail earns a moderately challenging rating, predominately due to its terrain.
If you're bringing your pooch, he must remain on a leash.
A good pair of sturdy, waterproof shoes will be your best friend on this scenic hike in Rhode Island. The trail can get incredibly muddy, and you'll come across a few stream crossings that you can't avoid.
Ticks are pretty common in this area, too, so you might want to use a tick repellant. You might also want to avoid shorts, even in the summer, due to a lot of brush along the trail.
Be prepared to deal with some rough terrain, including downed trees, which can lead to turned ankles. You may also deal with overgrowth, depending on when you hike.
There are several benches in the area that make it easy to sit down, take a breather, and enjoy the views, and that is what makes this trail worth the effort.
Pass rock formations and...
An old cemetery where you might be able to make out the writing on some of the headstones. The trail also passes a pond.
