Where do you go when you need to be near nature? There's no shortage of stunning natural scenery here in the Ocean State, especially if you love the beach. But we can't think of a more perfect, pristine seaside spot than the Mohegan Bluffs. While the bluffs require a trip to Block Island to see, the effort is totally worth it.
The Mohegan Bluffs are located just past the Southeast Lighthouse on Block Island's southern shores.
They were named for the battle of the Niantic and the Mohegan, which took place there in the 16th century.
It's hard to believe that a battle ever took place here, because this place is perfectly peaceful.
Although this is one of the more popular Block Island attractions in the summertime, the sound of the ocean drowns out any noise the visitors may make.
The views from the top of the bluffs are spectacular.
You'll be standing about 150 feet above the beach, and it will look like you can see for miles.
Of course, it's definitely worth walking down to the beach and exploring.
There's never a bad time to go to the beach.
Your experience starts with a massive staircase of about 140 stairs that drop straight down to the beach.
There are a few landings where you can stop and catch your breath -- or take in the views -- if needed.
Over the last century, the bluffs have eroded quite a bit.
Because of this, the Block Island Southeast Lighthouse was moved back about 260 feet so it wouldn't tumble into the ocean. However, it's all happening at a steady pace, and we should all be able to enjoy the bluffs for centuries to come.
If you want to visit the Mohegan Bluffs, you're welcome to do so from 30 minutes before sunrise to 30 minutes after sunset.
And it probably goes without saying that both the sunrises and sunsets here are fantastic.
What's your favorite part about the Mohegan Bluffs? If you had a day to spend enjoying nature, would you rather be here or at the Newport Cliff Walk?
