Rhode Island might be known as the Ocean State, but we've got some spectacular waterfalls as well. What they sometimes lack in height, they make up for in beauty. And if you're planning a visit to Ponaganset Falls, you'll be happy to see that it's easily accessible from Hemlock Road. In fact, you can practically drive right to it.
Located in Clayville, Ponaganset Falls is a roadside gem that sits right off Hemlock Road.
In fact, it's visible from the road, so there's no hiking required to reach it.
The falls cascade into the Scituate Reservoir, supplying the reservoir with water.
The manmade waterfall is surrounded by forests and fields, providing a nice, quiet place for visitors to relax.
There are three dams along the river's length that help regulate the flow of water into Ponaganset River.
The river used to converge with the Moswansicut River to form the North Branch Pawtuxet River. but that area is now flooded by the reservoir.
The water volume varies depending on the season, but you'll always hear that telltale soothing sound here.
There's something perfectly relaxing about the sounds of the water.
Ponaganset Falls sits at the southeast end of the Barden Reservoir.
The water from the falls eventually helps to supply the reservoir with enough water, making it the state's largest inland body of water and its source for fresh water.
Most people who visit simply come to enjoy the views, have a picnic, and relax by the water.
And there's truly never a bad time of year to visit.
