When the young ones have time off from school and they need a break from all the screen time, it's time to get outside. Take this easy hike that has plenty to keep the kids occupied in Rhode Island's Arcadia Management Area. The Ben Utter Trail is a great place to enjoy the outdoors and no member of the family will get bored on this busy hike. All you need is a pair of walking shoes and the desire to take an adventure.
The Arcadia Management Area at 14,000 acres is Rhode Island's largest natural treasure. It's the perfect wooded playground for families to enjoy.
While we don't suggest the Ben Utter trail for tiny legs, school-age children will thoroughly enjoy this hike. At 2 1/2 miles, it's long enough to keep the family busy without wearing anyone out.
Cross fun footbridges where you can get a bird's eye view of the rushing water underneath. Tell the story of The Three Billy Goats Gruff to wake up the kid's imaginations as you linger taking in the view.
Play a little hide and seek along the way. Use huge boulders and large trees to camouflage yourselves trailside.
Climb the natural staircase to feel like your ascending a mountain with a little less effort.
Flat leaf covered sections of the trail make a wonderful crunch underneath your feet as you hike the tree-line paths.
Reach Stepstone Falls and take in the water tumbling over the rocks. The falls aren't big, but they are impressive in their own way.
The rock ledges act as a wide staircase. The falls themselves are in a secluded area and the setting feels much like a fairy tale.
The Ben Utter Trail along Wood River is a wonderful spot for a family outing. An excursion into nature might be just what you need after the holidays are over.
Find the trail in the Arcadia Management Area on Plain Rd, Exeter, RI 02822.
