Beavertail State Park Is A Fascinating Spot in Rhode Island That’s Straight Out Of A Fairy Tale

Ask any Rhode Islander about Beavertail State Park and you're likely to get a smile. For 40 years, this scenic area has been providing us with stunning views and a glimpse into local history...and the property goes back much further. This entire area is completely enchanting and almost like walking straight into a fairytale.

You'll find Beavertail State Park in Jamestown, at the southern end of Conanicut Island in Narragansett Bay.

The park is best known for having some of the most beautiful vistas along the New England coastline.

This place is both a photographer's dream come true and a nature lover's paradise.

Hiking, saltwater fishing, and picnicking are all common here when weather allows.

The telltale Beavertail Lighthouse was built in 1856 and is still the premier lighthouse in Rhode Island.

The light provides navigation for boats and ships entering Narragansett Bay in the East Passage.

This park has quite a history. A 58-foot wooden tower built in 1749 burned down about four years later.

It was replaced by a fieldstone tower and used until 1856, when the present tower and keeper's quarters were finished. During World War II, the park area was part of Fort Burnside, one of several coastal spots designed to protect Narragansett Bay.

These days, the park is quiet and peaceful, especially at sunset.

The state created Beavertail State Park in 1980, after the old site was declared federal surplus land.

The state maintains it well, and it's a favorite local gathering spot as well as a top attraction for other visiting New Englanders.
