This Historic Park Is One Of Rhode Island’s Best Kept Secrets

Rhode Island is full of well-known historic sites and parks, but some are more hidden than others. While Ballard Park sits in the middle of the bustling city of Newport, it is often overlooked for the more popular attractions like the scenic Cliff Walk or the coastal gem of Fort Adams. Donated to the city in 1990, the 13-acre Ballard Park sits on the site of a former granite quarry that operated actively from the 1800s up until the 1930s.

The stone that was excavated from the quarry was used in local streets and buildings. As you walk through Newport, know that some of the stone you see was taken right from the quarry where Ballard Park sits today.

The imposing rock face at the end of the park is the result of decades of quarrying. Until you see these man-made cliffs up close it's hard to put in perspective how massive they are.

There is also a lovely field full of beautiful daffodils that are showcased during the annual Newport Daffodil Days Festival

Reach the peak and you'll feel like you're at the top of the world. But don't worry, you don't have to scale the rock face, there is a trail to get you up there.

Five different trails covering over one mile wander through the park. Cross boardwalks that bridge seasonal streams and wetlands.

The quarrying history is visible throughout the park as exposed rock faces and varying topography hint at the once-thriving industry.

Other paths lead past a former pasture, sneak through the woods, skirt rock ledges, and ascend to three scenic overlooks.

Looking west, you'll see a valley of lush green treetops during the summer months. But when the leaves take on their early spring and fall colors, the landscape turns into a colorful carpet that stretches on endlessly.

No matter what the season, Ballard Park in Newport, RI is a lovely natural area that gives visitors a glimpse into the state's quarrying past. You'll find the park at the intersection of Hazard and Wickham Roads.
