We have access to some pretty amazing hiking trails that will take us to all corners of the city and beyond. If you're up for a trek that will take you through lush forest and to a waterfall, add Cole Run Trail near Pittsburgh to your outdoor bucket list.
Less than 90 minutes from downtown Pittsburgh, tucked in Forbes State Forest in Somerset, Cole Run Trail promises plenty of natural beauty.
The 2.5-mile trail, which is rated moderate, meanders through the lush forest, past wetlands, and to a cascading waterfall.
Discover Mother Nature's artwork as you stroll past old trees with exposed roots.
(Watch where you're hiking, too, so you don't trip over any of the tree roots that may be along the trail.)
Look up at the trees that stretch skyward. If you're hiking in the spring or in the summer, you'll be protected from the full glare of the sun by the canopy the trees create.
Wear sturdy hiking boots or shoes, as you'll face some challenging terrain - from muddy spots to an abundance of rocks. Insects are prominent on the trail, so don't forget the bug spray.
The highlight of the trail, at least for waterfall lovers, is Cole Run Falls, which cascades down 15 feet into a beautiful pool of water.
On a hot day, if you stand close enough to the waterfall, you can feel the mist as Cole Fun Falls tumbles down.
The trail ends on the main road, so don't be too surprised when you arrive at the road. From there, you can just walk back to the parking lot near the trailhead.
Plan your visit on the official website of Forbes State Forest. You can also find a trail map on All Trails.
