6 Underrated Hikes in Pennsylvania That Rival the Famous Mount Joy to Mount Misery Trail

Visit these underrated Pennsylvania hikes for stunning views and a great workout!

Pennsylvania is known for diverse landscapes with a high level of biodiversity, as well as unique rock formations and multiple waterfalls. As a result, its hiking potential is limitless in all seasons. Nowhere else is this better represented than in the famous Mount Joy Trail to Mount Misery Trail Loop in Valley Forge National Historical Park. But, this beloved hike is not the only one that can highlight Pennsylvania's charms. Why not try a few from its national forests instead?

1. Castenea Boulder Field Loop

Distance: 6.7 miles

Location: Bald Eagle State Forest

"No risk, no reward" is a phrase that certainly applies to this loop hike. This is a hard hike, taking up to four hours to complete and including steep sections, scrambling, and possible river crossings. However, the reward is stunning views from above, a fascinating boulder field, and a dynamic trail that is truly fun.

2. Cole Run Trail

Distance: 2.7 miles

Location: Forbes State Forest

If you’re in the mood for a somewhat quick, but not overtly easy hike with swimming potential, waterfalls, and beautiful forest scenery, look no further. This loop hike takes under an hour and twenty minutes to complete and passes by two charming waterfalls. Hikers recommend doing this hike after a period of wetter weather to ensure the waterfalls are flowing freely rather than trickling down.

3. Rocky Knob Trail

Distance: 4.2 miles

Location: Michaux State Forest

This is a charming forest hike where the trail is lined with blueberries and flowers during certain months. Taking under two hours to finish, this loop hike has plants that make you feel as if you’re walking through a fairytale land. Hikers do warn that parts can be overgrown and some areas are a bit rocky (and difficult to navigate as a result).

4. Fred Woods Trail

Distance: 4.9 miles

Location: Elk State Forest

A loop trail known for its unique rock formations and taking about two hours to complete, Fred Woods Trail boasts beautiful views and a well-maintained, shaded trail. Open during all seasons, the trail is also a good spot to see local wildlife (coyotes, elk, even bears at times). Hikers warn about bugs and uneven footing and recommend sturdy hiking shoes, especially during or after wet weather.

5. Coupler Run Loop

Distance: 4.8 miles

Location: Moshannon State Forest

Taking almost two hours to complete, this loop hike is a remote, uncrowded gem in the middle of a forest. With streams following the trails and a diverse choice of plant life, this trail is loved for being peaceful, while also allowing for a decent workout.

6. Pole Steeple Trail

Distance: 1.4 miles

Location: Michaux State Forest

A quick (taking under an hour) hike to complete, this trail has multiple paths to choose from if you think the steeper sections are a bit too steep. Either way, it’s an out-and-back hike that’ll take you to the top of a hill where you can see the surrounding valley and Laurel Lake. Hikers note that the more moderate trail option is kid-friendly.
