Considered by many a hidden jewel in Philadelphia's Germantown neighborhood, Awbury Arboretum has been a popular destination for locals and travelers for more than a century.

Awbury Arboretum in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, belongs on the must-visit list of every Pennsylvanian.

Before that, however, the home and its 56 acres served as the summer home of the Copes, a prominent family. Awbury was named after Avebury, a village in England.

The family created the arboretum in 1916 as a way to preserve the land and to give visitors the chance to enjoy the quiet of nature.

While the grounds of the arboretum welcome guests daily from dawn to dusk, the Francis Cope House is open select hours throughout the year.

If you visit when the Cope House is open, you can tour the first floor

Go on a self-guided tour of the grounds by following one of the hiking trails. Trails meander past a goat barn, a food forest, a pond, and native grasses.

Dogs are allowed but must remain leashed. You might even pass local wildlife.

Awbury Arboretum hosts a variety of events throughout the year, including a farm market, yoga, and seasonal festivals.

The Cope House also features a gallery that displays the works of local artists from March through December annually.

If the kids are fascinated by nature, sign them up for summer camp or one of the after-school programs.
