Encounter Not One But Four Waterfalls On Pennsylvania’s Ketchum Run Gorge Trail At Loyalstock State Forest
Crossing paths with wildlife and stumbling upon waterfalls are the two things that make me absolutely love hiking. Even the sound of the tiniest waterfalls dripping into a stream or a brook is so relaxing, and it's tough not to feel that stress start to melt when a chipmunk scurries in front of me. From four breathtaking cascades to sensational views, this waterfall trail at Loyalsock State Forest has something for everyone, making it a must-hike this season.
With more than 200 miles of marked and unmarked trails and countless waterfalls, Loyalsock State Forest is the place to go for an adventure. If it's waterfalls you're after, set off on the Ketchum Run Gorge Trail.
Spanning more than 114,000 acres, Loyalsock State Forest is a prime destination for outdoor and nature lovers, allowing for such activities as hiking, mountain biking, kayaking, picnicking, and camping.
You'll need at least half a day, around four hours, to complete the 9.1-mile out-and-back Ketchum Run Gorge Trail that scores a difficult rating, so be prepared for quite a few challenges.
As you journey through the forest, you'll deal with some steep climbs, incredibly muddy terrain after it rains, and rocky conditions. Come prepared, including hiking poles to make the trek a little smoother.
Part of the trail is poorly marked with some hikers describing it as going off-the-beaten path. However, there's plenty to see if you're up for the challenge, including...
Four beautiful waterfalls: Lee's Falls, Ketchum Run Falls, Right Angle Falls, and Rode Falls.
When you arrive at Rode Falls, you'll immediately notice the ladder nearby. Climb up the ladder for a bird's eye view of the cascade.
Even better? You'll pass countless smaller unnamed waterfalls, too, on this picturesque path.
The trail also promises sensational views from scenic vistas.
Don't limit your visit to the warmer seasons either. Snow at Loyalsock State Forest means a ton of fun, including exploring on snowmobile and cross-country skis.
Before you set off, make sure you've got proper footwear and sufficient water for your hike. Cell service can be spotty to non-existent depending on your carrier, so let someone know where you're going.
