With more than 2,500 lakes in Pennsylvania, we can be forgiven if we overlook a few. That just makes it all the more special when we discover a hidden lake that we hadn't heard of before. If you just need a day away from the craziness of life, where you can relax in a tranquil setting, make your way to this secluded lake in Pennsylvania.
At just 256 acres, Whipple Dam State Park in Petersburg promises a cozy, quiet experience - whether you're heading to the beach or hitting the lone two-mile hiking trail.
Bring all of your beach gear along for a leisurely day on the 300-foot sand beach that leads straight into Whipple Lake.
While small at just 22 acres, the lake is perfect for jumping in and cooling off after soaking up the sun or building sandcastles.
You might also want to play a game of beach volleyball, a great way to relax after a leisurely swim. The beach features a dressing room, too.
The lake is also popular with boaters. Bring your own, or rent a canoe, kayak, paddleboat, or stand-up paddleboard from the boat rental concession stand.
Can you think of a better way to celebrate a day at the beach than with a cookout? Whether you want to sit near the beach or deep in the forest, you'll find charcoal stoves on which to grill.
If you're up for a bit of exploring, follow the two-mile Whipple Dam Trail. It's rated easy and will lead you through the forest.
Summer's the perfect time for visiting Whipple Dam State Park, but keep it in mind come wintertime too. Cross-country skiing, ice skating, and snowmobiling are all popular winter activities.
