This Pennsylvania park is the perfect place to get away from it all.
Sometimes going off the beaten path pays off in big ways, and that's certainly the case when you venture to Stackhouse Park, a 277-acre natural wonder in Johnstown.
Parking is free at this Pennsylvania park, which has several entrances. The main entrance, however, is on Luzerne Street.
One of the first things you'll likely notice at this hidden gem is how quiet and peaceful it is; wildflowers dot the landscape in the warmer months.
The best way to appreciate the natural beauty of Stackhouse Park is on one of its hiking trails. Choose from one of the trails that meander through the woods, up log stairs, and over fairy-tale footbridges.
Stackhouse Park offers seven miles of trails.
For the most accessible experience, follow the Luzerne Path. The tree-lined path, the park's widest trail, is called "the main road." It's ideal for a leisurely stroll.
If you're up for a bit of a challenge, set off on the Tall Timber Trail. Just be prepared for an increase in elevation.
When you need a break, drop onto one of the benches in the park. Snap a photo of the turquoise bench, too, that was made from disposable snack wrappers.
The cozy seat is known as the Sabaru Loves The Earth bench.
Bring a picnic along, too. The Pennsylvania park also has picnic pavillions and porta-potties.
Stackhouse Park is open all year from dawn to dusk.
