The Little Known Hiking Path in Black Moshannon State Park in Pennsylvania Is Our Favorite First Hike of the Year

Meander along this little known hiking path in Pennsylvania, an easy and pretty trail that's perfect for your first hike of the new year.

Waking up to a New Year brings with it so much hope for what’s ahead. We have a blank slate to create whatever we want in the coming days. That first day is ideal for quiet reflection, too, and I’ve found no better way to do that than on a scenic hike. Even if you’re not headed out on New Year’s Day, make your first adventure of the year a trek along this little-known hiking path in Pennsylvania.

Unless you’re a local or an avid hiker, you probably haven’t heard of the Star Mill Trail, a picturesque path that meanders through Black Moshannon State Park in Philipsburg. The 2.1-mile trail usually takes less than an hour to complete, and its easy rating makes it perfect for hikers of all ages and skill levels. Whether you’re looking for some alone time or want to bring the whole family along, including the kids and your leashed pups, the little-known hiking path in Pennsylvania is our favorite for a first hike.

For the easiest access to the trailhead, set your GPS for the parking lot on Beaver Road, near boat launch #4. Before you set off, bundle up and slip on comfortable, sturdy, and ideally waterproof shoes or boots. While the trail is predominantly flat, you’ll face a few obstacles, including rocky terrain, hidden roots, and slippery and muddy conditions, especially after it has rained or snowed.

If we’re lucky, the New Year will kick off with at least a dusting of snow on the ground and the lake. The pretty path boasts breathtaking views of Black Moshannon Lake, a 250-acre lake popular with ice skaters in the winter and swimmers during the summer. Boating and fishing are also popular.

Stroll on the winding path, past evergreen and pine trees. Ferns and wildflowers are prominent during the warmer months, and the Star Mill Trail promises serenity on a winter morning or afternoon. If it’s not too cold, sit on one of the benches or picnic tables by the lake, breathe in the crisp air, and enjoy the surrounding scenery.

A brisk winter hike offers a relaxing way to start the New Year, and if you have time after you’ve followed the Star Mill Trail, why not explore some more? Spanning more than 3,900 acres, Black Moshannon State Park transforms into a wonderland after it snows, making it an ideal destination for cross-country skiing and snowmobiling. If the lake is frozen, glide around on ice skates.
