When we think of beach days, our thoughts usually turn to lazy hours spent lounging by the ocean. Most people likely don’t associate Pennsylvania with sandy beaches, except maybe those on the shores of Lake Erie. However, you can find some pretty incredible beaches dotted across the state, like this amazing Pennsylvania beach, and it’s a beautiful destination in all four seasons.
Some places are just meant to be visited in all four seasons, like the beach at Bald Eagle State Park in Howard. The beach, however, will likely just be your launching point for exploring this nearly 6,000-acre state park.
It goes without saying that the 1,200-foot sandy beach is most popular in the summer when beachgoers stake out a spot on the soft sand before jumping into FJ Sayers Lake to cool off.
The beach is open to swimmers annually from Memorial Day to Labor Day and offers everything you need – changing rooms, restrooms, and a playground – for a day outdoors.
Bald Eagle State Park’s pristine beach can get quite crowded in the summer, but you’ll find it’s much quieter in the off-season. If you’re hoping for a bit of quiet in nature, take a stroll along the water or relax on the sandy shore.
The 1,730-acre lake is popular for more than swimming, too, and draws those who want to explore by boat, canoe, or kayak. A boat concession and marina are open seasonally.
While the beach and the lake are arguably popular amenities, explore some of the rest of the Pennsylvania state park that features nearly 15 miles of hiking trails, picnic areas, and wildlife watching.
During the winter, bundle up for a day of sledding, cross-country skiing, and ice skating.
A day likely won’t be enough – no matter what season you visit – to do everything you want to do at this state park in Pennsylvania. Check into the on-site Nature Inn at Bald Eagle (open all year), or book a stay in the seasonal campground.
