National Geographic Named These 3 Oregon Volcanoes As Some Of The Most Dangerous In America

National Geographic lists three Oregon volcanoes among the most dangerous in America.

Oregon's volcanoes recently earned a spot on National Geographic's "Most Dangerous Volcanoes in America" list. The list was created by government experts who took into account various criteria, including scientific data, numerous research studies, and various other measures. Their findings might surprise you: three of the most dangerous volcanoes in the entire country are in Oregon. Read on to see which Oregon volcanoes made the list...

According to National Geographic's findings, Crater Lake is the 17th most dangerous volcano in America.

Located atop Mount Mazama, Crater Lake was originally formed by a massive volcanic eruption.

While it has been quiet for thousands of years, scientists say that a surprise could always be in store.

We hope it doesn't blow anytime soon - Crater Lake is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the state, as well as one of the most beautiful locations in the entire country!

The next Oregon volcano on the list holds the number seven spot: Three Sisters, which is located just west of Bend, and considered a "very high threat."

In the late 1990s and early 2000s, an area of ground west of South Sister started to deform.

Nicknamed "the Bulge," this area was closely monitored by scientists, as magma moving and accumulating underground can be a sign of an impending eruption.

Last, but certainly not least, is Oregon's highest peak: the majestic Mt. Hood.

This mountain was ranked as the sixth most dangerous volcano in the United States, according to National Geographic.

The mountain was very active at the end of the last ice age, and there have been two significant eruptions in the last 1,500 years.

Since Mt. Hood has been in a long period of dormancy, scientists say that it is likely that eruptions could begin happening as frequently as every couple centuries. Only time will tell.
