The Darlingtonia State Natural Site is a botanical preserve just a few miles north of Florence that offers visitors the chance to reconnect with nature. So if you're curious to learn more about rare plant life while also enjoying a healthy dose of fresh air and scenery on one of the best boardwalk trails in Oregon, well, this trail is for you!
Did you know that there's a state park in Oregon that's dedicated solely to the preservation of one plant species?
As you might have guessed from its name, the Darlingtonia State Natural Site is a protected area for Darlingtonia californica, also known as the cobra lily.
These beautiful, otherworldly plants are rare and are the only member of the pitcher plant family found in Oregon. The most fascinating part of all? These plants are carnivorous, meaning they're not so friendly to insects.
Insects are lured in by nectar hidden inside the plants. Once they've landed on the flower, they are pulled downward and trapped inside.
The flowers are distinctive for their five purple petals and may remind you of California lady's slipper or even an orchid. Please note that collecting Darlingtonia samples is illegal.
The 18-acre park features a boardwalk trail that will lead you to the collection of the cobra lilies.
You'll be looking down at the flowers for a majority of this hike, but don't forget to look up! A beautiful canopy of trees will create a feeling of peace.
The Darlingtonia Trail is wheelchair accessible.
