The Gorgeous 9-Mile Trail in Oregon’s Columbia River Gorge Worth Every Drop of Sweat
Waterfalls, viewpoints, forests, wildflowers—there's so much to love about this loop trail.
The Oregon Coast is my happy place. However, a close second are several of the waterfalls around the state. Oregon is home to more than 230 listed waterfalls, and many draw in quite a crowd. In fact, one of my favorite waterfalls in the Beaver State is a favorite for many others as well—Multnomah Falls. I visit this waterfall every time I am in the Columbia River Gorge, and while there are a few different ways to see this spectacular sight, if you are up for a challenge, and want to explore even more waterfalls and natural beauty of the Columbia River Gorge, put on your hiking boots and check out the Devil’s Rest Loop Trail.
The Devil’s Rest Loop is just shy of nine miles, and a delightful day trip destination for those willing to put forth the effort. This is not an easy hike as you’ll climb more than 2,600 feet, and you’ll certainly hear your body scream as you tackle the trail's many inclines. However, the gorgeous waterfalls, overlooks, and natural beauty you’ll come across will make every step worth it.
Since this is a loop trail, you'll have a few options for beginning it, including at Multnomah Falls or the Wahkeena Picnic Site. Parking is right off the Historic Columbia River Highway, and both areas are quite busy, so I recommend you plan ahead. You may also want to download a trail map, as you will be hiking on multiple trails to form the large loop.
One of the things I love most about the Devils Rest Loop is that it offers something for every experienced hiker. Portions of this trail are well-trafficked and easy to follow, while others can be quite overgrown. You’ll also have areas that are much quieter and secluded than others. But no matter where you are on this trail, prepare yourself to capture some exquisite scenes.
As you hike, you’ll experience the lush scenery the Columbia River Gorge is known for. You’ll enjoy forest views, where wildflowers line the trail in the late summer months and vibrant foliage surrounds you in the fall.
There’s also nothing quite like the overlooks and viewpoints you’ll come across along your way, each one offering breathtaking views of the gorge, river, and so much more. These are excellent places to stop and rest before you continue on your way. The mesmerizing views also give you the perfect excuse to stop and rest just a little bit longer. We won’t judge if you need to stay in one place for a while. Like I said, this isn’t an easy journey.
The multiple waterfalls you’ll pass are also excellent places to stop, rest, and fall in love with some of Mother Nature’s creations. And it’s not just one or two waterfalls you’ll see on this trail. You will come across more than half a dozen, including Dutchman Falls, Wiesenanger Falls, Ecola Falls, Fairy Falls, Wahkeena Falls, and Multnomah Falls.
You’ll also hike to Devil’s Rest, another spot you’ll want to stop and enjoy for a while. This high, forest-covered hillside is part of the Boring Lava Field, which is approximately one million years old. With all of the natural features and pure beauty along this trail, I dare you to try to find a single favorite spot. It likely won’t be easy.
The Devil’s Rest Loop Trail can be quite muddy, rainy, and foggy. Always hike prepared for the weather, and hiking poles are recommended due to the inclines and tough terrain you may encounter. And make sure to give yourself plenty of time for this hike. Yes, it will challenge you, but the views will easily distract you.
