This Oklahoma Trail Is Brimming With Wildflowers And Now Is The Best Time To Hike It

Wichita Mountains in Oklahoma offers stunning wildflower hikes, including the easy Jed Johnson Tower Trail and the challenging Charons Garden Mountains Trail.

The Wichita Mountains in Oklahoma is known for its stunning beauty but did you know this time of year it's brimming with wildflowers? It's truly a magical scene and the best part is, you can take a hike right next to thousands and thousands of wildflowers. Keep reading and you'll see just how incredible this Oklahoma trail is this time of year.

There are over 15 miles of designated hiking trails in the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge.

If you're looking for an easy hike where you can see thousands of wildflowers, take the Jed Johnson Tower Trail — a 1.1-mile trail, out-and-back, that takes you along Lake Jed Johnson and out to the tower overlooking the lake.

From spring thru summer, the place is a sea of color. Look at this field of coreopsis wildflowers that are breathtakingly beautiful.

Wildflowers started blooming in March and will continue through September.

The Indian Blanket - a lovely red wildflower with yellow-tipped petals - are the official Oklahoma State Wildflower and bloom May - August.

The Jed Johnson Trail takes about an hour round-trip to enjoy the hike. There is a dirt path mixed with a little rocky terrain, but don't worry, it's not very difficult to navigate.

If you are an advanced hiker, take the Charons Garden Mountains Trail — a 5.8-mile moderately trafficked out and back trail that is rated difficult. Along the path, you'll be surrounded by colorful wildflowers, including the Baptisia flower.
