Most of us know Oklahoma has a wicked sense of humor when it comes to weather. We can experience summer in the dead of winter and even all four seasons in one week. But almost three years ago in February 2017, something crazy happened - the town of Mangum reached almost 100 degrees, breaking a record for the warmest winter day on record.
It's pretty typical during winter months in Oklahoma to experience a few warm days... you know the kind that reaches the upper 70s.
But three years ago on February 11, 2017, Oklahoma had a spell of exceptionally hot weather and the town of Mangum reached 99 degrees, setting a state record.
Can you believe the thermometers read almost 100 degrees in the month of February when we typically get a nice snowstorm? For comparison, the average February high in Mangum is 56 degrees, nowhere close to the record high of 99 degrees.
So, instead of throwing snowballs and piling on coats, Oklahomans were doing some unusual things.
People were spotted in swimming suits like it was the middle of summer. Some even jumped in rivers and pools!
The whole state reached temps in the 80s and 90s that day. Despite the sweltering temps, many people enjoyed outdoor activities you would normally only enjoy in the spring and summer. Do you remember this day in 2017?
Luckily this isn't a typical weather pattern we'll see every year. We get enough heat as it is in the summer months, we don't need the scorching temps invading our winter months too.
Oklahoma's upcoming winter is going to see it all... according to the Farmer's Almanac. A "polar coaster" winter is headed our way, so be prepared for a variety of weather - hopefully not any temps near 100 degrees, though.
