This Little Known Park In Oklahoma Is A Hidden Gem And It Will Take Your Breath Away

You could spend a lifetime exploring all the beautiful places in Oklahoma, but there are a few that you might not even know exist. The Red Slough Wildlife Management Area in the southeast part of the state is a little-known hidden gem.

The Red Slough Wildlife Management Area is down in the far southeast corner of Oklahoma, near the Oklahoma/Texas border.

The area covers 5,814 acres with several different habitats including woodlands, riparian zones, marshes, and wet prairie.

This Roseate Spoonbill is just one example of the 305 bird species here. Various species of ducks, grebes, cormorants, and herons are common.

Approximately 38 species of reptiles call this refuge home, including the American alligator. The best time to see alligators here is between March and May.

Keep an eye out for some of the most colorful insects you've ever seen. This is a well-known spot for folks who love butterflies and dragonflies, and the species here are truly stunning.

Ten observation platforms throughout the area make it easy to view wildlife and take photos.

Red Slough is the only place in Oklahoma to find some of these animals and insects. For instance, this part of the reserve is the only habitat in the state for the duckweed firetail, a species of dameselfly.

You'll want to allow an entire day to explore this beautiful wildlife management area.
