Take An Easy Out-And-Back Trail To Enter Another World At Heavener Runestone Park In Oklahoma
Heavener Runestone Park offers a unique hiking experience with historical Viking inscriptions and lush scenery in Oklahoma.
Spring is right around the corner which means it will be prime hiking season here in the Sooner State. For an easy out-and-back hike, head to Heavener Runestone Park and take the loop trail to the falls where you'll feel like you've entered another world. The foliage is thick and luscious and you'll also find fascinating pieces of history, including Viking inscriptions that some say date back to 1000 A.D.
Heavener Runestone Park is a 55 park located in Le Flore County in southeastern Oklahoma. The area looks like something from another world...not something you would normally find in the state.
There are two short trails in the park: Runestone Loop and Heavener Runestone Park Nature Trail. Both are under a half-mile in length.
To get to the waterfall, take Runestone Loop - a 0.2 mile moderately trafficked loop trail that is rated as moderate.
Even though it's short, you still need to proceed with caution, as some areas and boulders can become slippery.
A beautiful waterfall flows freely below the rocks and is surrounded by lush greenery.
The park is one of the most unusual sites in the Southern U.S. due to its mysterious carvings on the side of the rocks. Although not proven, most people believe these carvings were left by the Vikings over 1,000 years ago.
The moment you enter this otherworldly nature spot, you'll be overtaken with the beauty that surrounds you.
There's also a cool bridge that offers beautiful views from above. Every direction you look will take your breath away.
