Oklahoma explorers will want to head to J.T. Nickel Family Nature and Wildlife Preserve in Tahlequah. This little-known nature preserve is the largest protected conservation area in the Ozarks. Over 17,000 acres sit in northeastern Oklahoma in Cookson Hills and overlook the beautiful Illinois River. It's also a habitat for uncommon and migratory birds, so bird watchers will want to be sure to visit. It's also home to three hiking trails that are all under 2 miles, so it's great for families with small children.
The J.T. Nickel Family Nature and Wildlife Preserve is open 7 days a week during daylight hours. It is free of charge and is a great place for nature lovers to explore some of northeastern Oklahoma's beauty.
The preserve was founded in 2000 after a generous donation from the John Nickel family. It is now privately owned and managed by the Oklahoma Nature Conservancy.
After you enter the preserve, you'll find a building that is the headquarter of the preserve. It is only open on weekdays but the preserve is open every day.
Be sure and read the signs and maps before heading out to explore. There is a lot of valuable and educational information.
The preserve is full of rolling hills and overlooks the Illinois River. The area is so peaceful and the views are gorgeous.
Three hiking trails are located in the preserve and all of them are rated easy. Two of them are about 1.5-miles long and the third one is 0.6 miles long.

Another great natural place to visit in Oklahoma is the Three Forks Nature Center in Sequoyah State Park. This one-of-a-kind nature center is open to the public and has a variety of live animals, interpretive displays, and programs for guests of all ages.
