Ohio has so many hidden gems it should be the Hidden Gem Capital of the World. Most people don't know there's a stunning, sapphire quarry in Sandusky County. Tucked away in the small town of Gibsonburg, Ohio, you'll find White Star Quarry. It's a little-known diving resort that Ohio explorers will fall in love with. (And if you'd rather not scuba dive, you can always check out the designated swimming area in the summer months or have a picnic by the quarry.) Is your sense of adventure longing for a bit of excitement? You can't go wrong with a visit to White Star Quarry in Ohio.
Take a look:
In the winter and early spring, the water at White Starr Quarry is jaw-dropping, deep blue and crystal clear. It's truly, devastatingly gorgeous.
White Star Quarry may not be a natural destination, but it is stunning. This man-made landmark is 15 acres in size, dwarfing even many natural lakes.
As the water heats up in the warmer months, the visibility decreases somewhat, due to the added nutrients.
However, the visibility rarely gets lower than 20 ft. and it averages in the 30 ft. - 40 ft. range, according to the quarry's website. Nonetheless, this is an incredible place to put your diving skills to the test.
In the summer months, there is a designated swim area and beach available to visitors for a fee.
This place is seriously fun for the whole family. With options for little swimmers and grownups alike, the landscape of White Star Park is nearly irresistible.
The designated scuba diving area will bring out your adventurous side. Scuba equipment, dive lights and underwater cameras are available to rent on site.
You can embark on a solo diving adventure or head underwater with an instructor. Depending on your skill level, there is something here to accommodate your needs.
Under the water, you never know what you'll find. You'll stumble across everything from sunken boats...
All sorts of oddities have been added to the underwater landscape for your enjoyment. You'll even find caves and an underwater forest!
...to a friendly fish or two.
The Ohio Department of Natural Resources stocks this lake, so there's much to see. Local species like carp, trout, and even gar call this underwater wonderland their home.
You can even participate in an underwater pumpkin carving contest on select dates! (Creative bucket list item? Definitely.)
There are all sorts of fun events at this fascinating spot! The aforementioned pumpkin carving contest has been taking place for over a decade and a half.
Even if you don't get in the water, the scenery alone is worth the visit. Bring the family along for an unforgettable picnic and let the kids play on the nearby playground.
