This Cave Hike Is One of Ohio’s Most Unique Trails

In less than a mile you'll explore a cave, waterfalls, gorges, and a whole lot more in Ohio's Hocking Hills State Park.

As an avid hiker, I often find myself daydreaming about summiting a via ferrata or ascending the famous "14ers" of the American West. However, any good traveler knows that sometimes nature's best gems are right in our own backyard. That's where one of the best hiking trails in Ohio comes in: Old Man's Cave and Naturalist Cabin Loop.

Located about an hour from Columbus in Hocking Hills State Park, the Old Man's Cave and Naturalist Cabin Loop is a short and sweet 0.9-mile journey. Hikers can expect to spend 20 minutes on this looped hike, with a modest elevation gain of 78 feet.

The cave earned its name from local legend Richard Rowe, who visited it in the late 18th century. It's rumored he loved the area so much that he decided to spend the rest of his days as a recluse within the cave's 150-foot-deep walls.

Today, you can explore the cave, sandstone cliffs, and multiple waterfalls in the park. The waterfall right next to the cave tumbles down a respectable 20 feet. There’s even a footbridge that lets you gaze down on the falls. Additionally, small rock bridges and ladders are scattered along the gorge floor.

When you approach the old Naturalist Cabin and Visitor Center, you’ll know you’re almost at the end of your hike. You’ll recognize it by its small size and rustic cabin feel. After your hike, be sure to swing by the new visitor center to see what the rangers are up to, as they often host special events and educational programs.

The best time to visit the trail is between March and November. However, if you're a snow bunny like me, the icicles and frozen waterfalls will entice you in the winter, as well. I think it feels like a scene straight out of the White Witch's kingdom in The Chronicles of Narnia. The best part? You can bring your furry friends on this hike, as long as they’re on a leash.

The hike is relatively short, so be prepared to encounter other explorers on your romp through the woods. The dense forest, deep valleys, and geological phenomena beckon visitors at all times of the year.

If you're looking to extend your adventure, three nearby trails can easily be combined with the Old Man’s Cave and Naturalist Cabin Loop. These include:

  • Upper Falls to Lower Falls via Buckeye Trail
  • Gorge Overlook Loop via Buckeye Trail
  • Old Man's Cave to Cedar Falls via Buckeye Trail

The park is particularly beautiful come autumn when the leaves begin their annual color-changing dance. It's also a popular spot for winter activities such as cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. Hocking Hills State Park even offers designated areas for rock climbing and rappelling.
