The Iconic Trail in Ohio Everyone Should Hike Once in Their Lifetime
For those seeking adventure, the Lamping Homestead Trail in Ohio is an iconic hike just waiting to be discovered.
Monroe County is a little place on the eastern edge of Ohio, where the state line with West Virginia lies. Nestled in this little county are countless recreational opportunities, including some truly awe-inspiring Ohio hiking trails that I'm sure you'll fall head over heels in love with just like I did. The Lamping Homestead Trail is a stunning example of Ohio's natural beauty. This state is tragically underrated, with plenty of absolutely jaw-dropping things to see, do, and experience. I think all it really takes to truly appreciate it is to experience it firsthand.
The trail is located within the Lamping Homestead Recreation Area, near both Rinard Mills and a unit of the Wayne National Forest. The recreation area was established in the 19th century and initially tended to by a family known (unsurprisingly) as the Lampings. A cemetery within the park hints at a story about the extreme challenges of living life back then—it was rough, and the numerous family graves certainly illustrate this aspect of living in the wilderness in the 1800s.
The Lamping Homestead Trail is a short and sweet hiking loop within the recreation area, measuring just under 2 miles in length. It's easy enough for even smaller children to enjoy, and it's open year-round. My favorite times of year to visit this amazing hiking trail in Ohio are spring and autumn; there's just something about the transitional seasons that's particularly magical. But, goodness, when it's covered in greenery, it's outrageous in its beauty.
This hike is just the beginning. The entire Lamping Homestead Recreation Area is worth a day trip (or longer) and offers numerous camping, fishing, picnicking, and canoeing opportunities. This park is very popular among birders and wildlife watchers, thanks to the vast array of critters that you can typically spot here. The Lamping Homestead Trail is an awesome way to immerse yourself in it entirely.
This little trail is one of two you can hike at the park, and if you're camping here, or just spending the day, you'll find that hiking both trails is quite manageable and also an excellent way to explore the recreation area.
