Admire The Beauty Of Fall At North Dakota’s Pembina Gorge State Recreation Area

Pembina Gorge State Recreation Area in North Dakota offers stunning fall foliage with extensive trails for hiking, biking, and horseback riding.

When fall comes to North Dakota, the more iconic vision people think of is the combines out on the fields harvesting that year's crop rather than the color of the trees. This state isn't without trees, but they aren't too common beyond the river valleys. It is a grassland, after all. That's not to say there aren't trees, however, so if you love the sight of colorful fall foliage, you don't have to leave the Peace Garden State to find it. In fact, one of the most beautiful areas to find vivid fall colors is right in northern ND. Check out this stunning fall recreation area in North Dakota to see what we mean:

The Pembina Gorge would like to have a word with anyone who thinks North Dakota is treeless —  just look at that dense forest! Once fall comes around, it becomes a true masterpiece.

The Pembina Gorge State Recreation Area, located up north near Langdon, North Dakota, is one of the top fall foliage destinations in the state. The hilly river valley transforms into a colorful scene each year.

All along the Pembina River and throughout the surrounding forest, you'll find bright shades of red, gold, and orange throughout September and October.

This is the largest, undisturbed tract of forest in all of North Dakota, and the recreation area —  which covers 2,800 acres of it — has more than 30 miles of trails that you can explore it on.

The many trails wind through the trees, along the riverbanks, and around the hidden pockets of wetlands. You'll definitely want to bring your camera to grab shots of these colorful scenes.

The park's trails are open for hiking, biking, and horseback riding. The trails are extensive, so be sure to grab a trail map before you embark.

There's no doubt about it: the Pembina Gorge is one of the most beautiful fall destinations in North Dakota. These stunning colors aren't around long, though, so get there before all the leaves have fallen.
