Take A Hike To A North Dakota Overlook That’s Like A Miniature Grand Canyon
The Boicourt Overlook Trail in Theodore Roosevelt National Park offers stunning views and is an easy, short hike.
There are many hiking trails within North Dakota's famed Theodore Roosevelt National Park - at least 30! So, how do you know which ones to do and which ones to skip? If you ask us, we don't think you should skip any of them, but there are a few that we think you should do before the rest. What about something short and sweet to start with? The Boicourt Overlook Trail in North Dakota is a gem in and of itself; it's so scenic and the views are so stunning that it feels like our very own Grand Canyon right here in our backyards. Check it out!
The Boicourt Overlook trail is short and sweet, at less than one mile long (0.8 miles).
It's pretty easy, too, and the reward at the end almost feels too good to be true. It's one of the best overlooks in North Dakota, and it's all ours!
The trail is paved until about halfway through.
It's quite easy, with very little elevation gain, and the whole walk is quite beautiful.
The main draw, however, is the overlook itself.
Walk to the end of the path and take it all in. The canyons of the Badlands seem to go on forever, and when the skies overhead are blue - which they usually are - the canyon and sky feel infinite.
During the warmer months, the grasses in the canyon paint it gold and green.
And in the winter, it becomes a frosty wonderland beneath a dusting of snowfall.
The Boicourt Overlook Trail can be found about halfway through the South Unit Scenic Drive.
As we mentioned earlier, it's a super-short walk - 0.8 miles - and as a result, it's the perfect place to stop for a bit and get the blood flowing into your legs again (with a killer view).
Unfortunately, this is one hike you might have to do alone - there are no furry friends allowed on the trail (not even on a leash).
To access the Boicourt Overlook Trail in Indiana, you'll want to enter the south unit of Theodore Roosevelt National Park. Embark upon the South Unit Scenic Drive, and about halfway through, you'll see pull-offs for Boicourt Overlook Trail.
Who knew North Dakota had its very own Grand Canyon? Well, now you do - go out and explore it! Need a little more North Dakota amazingness in your life? Check out these seven hikes under three miles long that you're sure to love.
