The Iconic Trail in North Dakota You Need To Hike at Least Once
Explore the White Horse Hill Loop near Devils Lake, North Dakota—an easy two-mile trail with wildlife, wildflowers, and stunning seasonal colors.
North Dakota is a place for adventure, through and through. It's not just beautiful—it’s rich in history and filled with jaw-dropping natural scenery that can impress even the most seasoned traveler. Sure, North Dakota hasn’t fully emerged as a top visitor destination, but those of us who live or have lived here know better.
Take the White Horse Hill National Game Preserve, for example. Just 12 miles south of Devils Lake, it’s a dream for day hikers. The two-mile loop through the Peace Garden State’s emerald landscape is rated easy and perfect for families with kids. The preserve also has a history that shaped it into what it is today.
Originally established in 1904 by President Theodore Roosevelt as a national park, the area was later reclassified as a national game preserve in 1931. Because of its relatively small size and focus on wildlife rather than large-scale recreation, it was transferred to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to protect native species. In 2019, it was officially renamed White Horse Hill National Game Preserve to honor the heritage and history of the Dakota people and the Spirit Lake Tribe, whose ancestral lands include this region. Today, it’s home to bison, elk, white-tailed deer, prairie dogs, and other wildlife that thrive in this unique prairie ecosystem.
The White Horse Hill Loop itself is peaceful and calm. If you arrive early (the preserve opens at 8 a.m.), you might even have it all to yourself. There are no fees, which makes it an easy and stress-free spot for a morning hike. Trails can be wet and muddy at times—or occasionally impassable due to high water—but don’t let that discourage you. Just wait a bit and return later; nature has a way of taking care of itself.
Personally, I think this hike deserves a spot on just about everyone’s North Dakota bucket list. My favorite times to visit are spring, summer, and autumn—though autumn is especially breathtaking, with the preserve bursting into brilliant, fiery colors. In spring and summer, the trails are dotted with wildflowers and surrounded by lush greenery, giving each visit a distinct feel. No matter the season, there’s always something wonderful to see.
