When it comes to berry picking in North Dakota, there are a few amazing U-pick farms to choose from. But the one I'd like to show off today isn't technically in North Dakota—it's actually in Moorhead, Minnesota, a whopping five minutes from Fargo. It's an incredible seasonal farm where you can pick buckets of ripe berries, fruits, veggies, flowers, and more, depending on the time of year. Welcome to Farm in the Dell, an amazing family friendly U-pick farm in North Dakota.

Farm in the Dell is an idyllic spot to add to your summer day trip in North Dakota. Whether you're visiting solo to collect from farm-fresh berries or hoping to bring the kiddos along for time spent in nature, this charming farm is the place to be. Here's what to know about its berry-picking experience before you go.

What Makes This Fargo Berry Farm So Unique

Farm in the Dell is a truly special place. The farm was founded in 2012 by the parents of children with developmental disabilities about to enter life post-high school. To help them learn everyday life skills, they created Farm in the Dell in partnership with Red River Valley, giving children with disabilities volunteer and work experience in a welcoming, safe environment.

Today, the farm operates with dozens of Garden Engineers on staff, as well as thousands of volunteers and community members helping keep the farm and its mission alive. While the farm grows all sorts of fruits and vegetables throughout the year, the U-pick opportunities include strawberries, flowers, and herbs in the summer, and pumpkins in the fall.

Farm in the Dell also has its own on-site market and hosts fun events throughout the year, including a family-friendly fall festival, berry breakfasts, volunteer days, and more.

What to Expect When You Visit This Berry Farm

When you visit Farm in the Dell, you'll embark on one of the best outdoor adventures in North Dakota. There is nothing more fun than searching through strawberry bushes to find the ripest, juicest ones. The farm opens for the season in May, but U-pick typically begins in mid-June, depending on weather conditions. U-pick strawberries cost $8 per quart, and you'll be given berry baskets for your harvest.

Because weather and crop conditions are always changing, strawberries might not always be ripe or available. Stay tuned to the farm's website and Facebook page for U-pick conditions and seasonality. U-pick is available only on Thursdays from 10 a.m. to noon and 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.

After spending time roaming through the lush field, head to the farm's market (if it's open) to shop for other local goods. And we know it'll be hard to resist, but wait to eat your berries until you get home and have thoroughly washed them—don't eat them straight off the bushes.

Other Tips for Planning Your Visit

U-pick produce is offered on a first-come, first-served basis, so be sure to check in early in the season for the best results. The farm recommends wearing closed-toe shoes, wearing hats, sunglasses, and sunscreen to protect from the sun, and bringing bug spray, as some insects hover around the property.

Make sure you also bring plenty of water and snacks to stay fueled during your U-pick experience, and seek shade when you can. If you're hoping to volunteer, you'll also need to sign a waiver before getting started.

Another note: While Farm in the Dell has port-a-potties on site, there are no traditional bathroom facilities. Additionally, the parking lot is spacious, but the farm encourages large groups to carpool.

Seasonal Events and Activities at the Farm

The U-pick experience isn't the only wondrous activity at Farm in the Dell. The North Dakota farm also hosts seasonal activities and events that the whole family will enjoy. Berry Breakfasts, on select mornings from 10 a.m. to noon, involves a volunteer shift followed by a delicious breakfast filled with, you guessed it, fresh berries from the field!

Then there's the annual fall festival with a pumpkin patch, barrel train rides, mini horses, concessions, and more. (Dates for 2026 are TBD.) For just $5 per person, you'll not only have a great time celebrating autumn, but you'll be donating to a good cause—supporting individuals with disabilities in the community.

No matter what time of year you decide to visit Farm in the Dell, there are always fun events happening! Check the farm's website often to stay updated on upcoming festivities.
