  • Need To Know: General admission is $8 per person (infants and toddlers 2 and under are free), with season passes $25 per person or $100 per family. Half-price Thursdays and wagon discounts are available; some activities have extra fees.

The Norsk Høstfest runs for four fantastic days, filled with authentic food, top-notch entertainment, vendors, shopping, and SO much more. It practically makes fall official around here. Time for Norsk Høstfest already? Must be fall.

8. Medora Annual Hot Air Balloon Rally

  • Location: Medora, North Dakota
  • Wow Factor: Every early autumn, the Medora Hot Air Balloon Rally lifts off, drawing folks from all over the country. It’s more than just photogenic—it’s tradition.
  • Need To Know: Balloons launch bright and early at 6:30 a.m., kicking off a day of fun with breakfast, a guided hike, live music, and more—all with free admission.

Did you know North Dakota has an annual hot air balloon festival? Each fall it returns with more balloons, activities, and delights to blow you away (not literally). Held during the closing weekend of the famed Medora Musical, it’s the best excuse to stay all weekend and soak it all in.

Not everyone’s made of money; in fact, I reckon most folks aren’t, so inexpensive—if not free—things to do and see are always appreciated. There are lots of free or low-cost activities in North Dakota in the fall, and none will break the bank. From road trips to small towns and city parks, I’ve got you covered with ideas for things to do this year that won’t cost much.

10. Enjoy a Fall Foliage Road Trip

  • Wow Factor: Fall foliage is a fun thing to look forward to each year, so what better way to ring in fall than by driving around and enjoying as many colors in as many places as you can?
  • Need To Know: With 11 state scenic byways and two National Scenic Byways, North Dakota is the perfect place for an autumn road trip.

Fun fact: it’s 100% possible to embark on a fall foliage road trip in North Dakota, and other than gas, it shouldn’t cost anything (unless you want snacks, which I always do). Check out any—or all—of the scenic byways, like the Sheyenne River Valley Scenic Byway and the Turtle Mountain Scenic Byway, and fall in love with this stunning little corner of the world. Taking a couple of days is recommended to see it all, though you can easily do them without the bells and whistles, too.

11. Indulge in Hiking, Biking and More
