A Bit Of An Unexpected Natural Wonder, A Preserved Pristine Coastal Land Is Hiding In North Carolina

The unexpected natural wonder Latham-Whitehurst Nature Park in New Bern, North Carolina, opened in 2011 as Craven County's first nature park. The 133 acres of preserved pristine coastal land offer bird-watching, hiking, and fishing. This lovely well-maintained space features restrooms, a picnic area, an extensive gravel walking trail, and a 2,000-foot boardwalk giving access to Broad Creek.

The 1.5-mile, wide natural trail loop is an easy hike, with two restrooms along the way, one in the parking lot and one closer to the water.

And you'll also find interactive and educational signs posted for your convenience.

Several trail cuts in between the main loop provide access to a variety of interesting plants and organisms.

Some of the mossy areas and exposed tree roots can be slippery.

Other spots were created for relaxing and enjoying nature.

The pretty trail leads to the boardwalk and opens up to the lovely Broad Creek.

This spacious property was purchased by the Coastal Land Trust and transferred to Craven County for the purpose of this nature park.

An on-site dock includes a fishing area and canoe and kayak launch.
