The Crystal Coast’s Most Rewarding Beachcombing Hike Starts at a Pre-Civil War Fort
Plus, you'll get a healthy dose of sunshine, shells, and charm.
The beauty of North Carolina's Crystal Coast cannot be overstated. This stretch of barrier islands, sometimes referred to as the Southern Outer Banks, is marked by white-sand beaches, crystal-clear waters, and vibrant seaside towns. There are so many ways to experience the Crystal Coast, but in my opinion, it's hard to beat a classic walk along the surf.
And for this, the Fort Macon Beach Trail is an obvious choice. Not only does it promise breathtaking ocean views, but you'll also enjoy searching for shells and other treasures along the way.
Not far from Morehead City, North Carolina, Fort Macon State Park is the home of a beautifully restored pre-Civil War fort. Many state park visitors are eager to see the park's frequent musket and cannon demonstrations, along with the immersive educational exhibits.
But in my opinion, the park's main attraction is the beach. It's idyllic, with crashing waves, sparkling waters, and an expansive sky overhead. Plus, the beach lends itself perfectly to strolls and all kinds of treasure hunts.
The Fort Macon Beach Trail is a 2.5-mile out-and-back trail that takes a little under an hour to complete, but there's no need to rush! Remember—you've got some serious beachcombing to do. The entire trail follows the beach, and there's no traditional pathway.
Most hikers prefer simply walking barefoot along the surf and enjoying the sights and sounds of the coast. The trail crosses over stretches of sandy beach, a salt marsh, and dune fields, all of which provide vital habitats to birds and sea turtles. Depending on the time of year, you may even spot some protected sea turtle nests!
This region is famous for its seashells, so be sure to keep on the lookout for something that's washed ashore. Because the park is located near the Beaufort Inlet, there are lots of shells carried in with the tide. Some unique varieties you can spot include whelks, sand dollars, scallops, coquina shells, and many more.
Throughout the year, the park hosts educational events and seasonal discussions about Carolina Seashells. Check the NC State Parks website for current programming.
One thing to note about this trail: since it's entirely on the beach, there isn't any shade, so be sure to plan accordingly. Also, as is true with all North Carolina trails, please leave only footprints. As is common practice with beachcombing in the Outer Banks, bring two bags with you: one for shells and one for any trash you find along the way. Your fellow hikers will thank you!
Need a place to stay? Camping is not permitted at Fort Macon State Park, but you can reserve a site at the nearby Hammock Beach State Park if you're interested in pitching your tent near the water.
Can't get enough of North Carolina's beaches? Be sure to check out the Tracks in the Sand Trail, a summer-friendly hike in Jockey's Ridge State Park, where you can both hike and swim.
