This Easy North Carolina Hiking Trail Delivers Big Views for a Romantic Valentine’s Day

Stroll through maritime forest and tree tunnels as you make your way to breathtaking ocean views. And don't forget to look for migrating birds and seashells along the way!

Nothing says romance quite like a walk on the beach, and that rings true even in winter. For an unexpectedly delightful Valentine's Day adventure, we encourage you to take a loved one to the North Carolina coast.

Specifically, we're talking about Elliot Coues Trail inside Fort Macon State Park. The trail is a little over three miles but hugs the coast, offering explorers a fresh breath of salty air, views of the forest, plus a little time exploring the marsh. It sets the stage for quality time with a loved one, and we can think of no better place to celebrate Cupid's Day.

There's a lot to appreciate about Fort Macon State Park. This Atlantic Beach landmark is famous for its dune fields, salt marsh, and, of course, breathtaking water views. The park is also home to a restored fort that predates the Civil War, and it's possible to see live cannon and musket demonstrations throughout the year. In the summer, visitors flock to the park to go swimming, stroll the beach, and even look for dolphins.

This time of year, things are notably quieter, but this only adds to their allure. The four miles of hiking trails within the park are pristine, and visiting during the off-season means that you'll have them virtually to yourself. The Elliot Coues Trail is perhaps the best introduction to the park. It makes a 3.2-mile circuit and takes most hikers a little under an hour to complete.

What makes this trail so romantic is its proximity to nature every step of the way. Whether you're passing through the maritime forest, hiking the boardwalk under a canopy of wind-swept trees, or standing atop a dune peering out over the sound, you'll feel completely connected to nature—and your loved one.

Something I always look for in a hiking trail is variety, and this trek certainly delivers. Despite being a beach hike, this trail isn't flat like you'd expect. There's a hint of elevation gain, which gives the trail its moderately difficult rating. Reviewers note that in addition to the landscape itself, there's a lot to enjoy about this special Carteret County park. Nature enthusiasts should keep their eyes peeled for birds; there are approximately 300 different species that can be found here.

As you're strolling the beach hand-in-hand with your partner, don't forget to look down. You'll be passing over one of the best beaches in North Carolina to find seashells, and they are exquisite! End your outing at sunset and prepare to be enchanted by the hues of color that suddenly appear in the sky.

You won't be able to camp here, but you can venture to Hammocks Beach State Park (a 45-minute drive) for a lovely year-round campground. And if you're looking for additional ways to make your Valentine's Day more romantic, be sure to check out our itinerary planner for nearby recommendations!
