Swim at This Iconic Natural Swimming Hole in North Carolina for the Ultimate Outdoor Fun

Come splash around at this natural swimming hole in North Carolina.

The days are getting longer, the wildflowers are beginning to bloom, the temperatures are rising…it’s my favorite time of the year! Before we know it, we’ll be spending our weekends enjoying all of the wonderful swimming holes in North Carolina. If you’re looking for a new swimming spot to add to your list, allow me to introduce you to Upper Creek Falls.

Upper Creek Falls is a picturesque waterfall with multiple cascades tucked away in the Pisgah National Forest along NC Highway 181. There are two ways to reach Upper Creek Falls. One is the Upper Creek Falls Loop Trail, which is about 1.5 miles and has a lot of switchbacks and a couple of water crossings. The other route takes you to the lower falls, where most folks swim. Check out the map on AllTrails so you can get an idea of which route to take.

However you get to the swimming hole, you’ll want to bring a pair of waterproof shoes. These rocks can be very slippery, and no one wants to end their day in an urgent care facility.

Speaking of rocks, there are plenty here, both above and below the water. The larger rocks that jet out from the water are perfect for sunbathing and holding your belongings. Since this is a fairly popular swimming hole in North Carolina, don’t expect to have the place all to yourself. If you were to show up during the week, you might luck out! Weekends during the summer are when the crowds really start coming out.

The gentle gradient of the rocks makes for a natural waterslide of sorts, which is really fun! Feel free to bring an inflatable tube to join in on the fun. There used to be a rope swing at the bottom of the waterfall—I haven’t personally seen it, but I have no reason to believe it’s gone (unless the hurricane took it).

The water is going to be cold, but it will feel very refreshing after the hike! There are both shallow and deep areas, and it’s pretty kid-friendly. Don’t overestimate the power of rushing water, guys. Little ones can get pulled into the current quicker than you think, so keep an eye on everyone. There is no lifeguard on duty, so I’d recommend packing some floaties or a lifejacket for the youngest nature lovers.

Relaxing in a natural swimming hole surrounded by beautiful scenery with the sounds of rushing water and nearby songbirds has got to be one of my top three favorite summer activities. If you’re in the Newland area, it’s absolutely worth checking out. Share this article with someone you want to visit this swimming hole in North Carolina with! It would make the perfect side quest for folks taking in the sights along the Blue Ridge Parkway.
