Why Winter Is the Best Season to Visit This New York Scenic Overlook

The Catskills are quickly becoming one of my favorite spots in New York State. Not only do they have deep roots in the hospitality sector of New York, leaving me fond memories of childhood visits, but their natural landscape is one of the state's most beautiful and unique. During the warmer months, the mountains and parks are amazing for hiking and picnicking, with incredible overlooks and vast trail networks that offer a challenge without too many perilous spots.

In the winter, the trails often seem empty, making it the perfect time to hike to one of the mountains' most beautiful spots. Artist's Rock in the winter is a true hidden gem, and it is best reached via the Artist's Rock, Sunset Rock, and Newman's Ledge via Mary's Glen Trail. This 6.2-mile moderate hike is still accessible in winter in Catskill Park, and those who take it will be rewarded with a rare and stunning vista.

Artist's Rock is one of the best hiking destinations in the Catskills, and the park is usually packed with hikers during the busy season. However, if you haven't been here during the winter, you're missing a different world to explore.

Catskill Park is almost supernaturally peaceful during winter. As this area gets heavy snow, the trails can be partially obscured. But if you've been here before or know how to navigate, it's one of the area's best spots for winter hiking.

While the area can be buggy in the spring and summer, it's usually brisk and cold during the winter, making it a great time to explore the frozen waterways. Leashed dogs are welcome, and the terrain is challenging with a 790-foot elevation gain but it's generally not hazardous.

The temperature here is usually very low, so bundle up. However, the low temperature means you'll likely visit some spots that feel like the entire area has been frozen in time.
