Underrated State Forest Hikes in New York That Rival the Famous Glen Creek Gorge Trail

Looking to get out of the city? Try hiking these underrated state forest trails in New York!

When travelers hear the term "New York," they’re often going to think first of New York City, rather than the state itself. The sprawling metropolis is a sight to behold, but one might be surprised by how dynamic the rest of the state can be, especially with natural landscapes. To access these places, many might choose to hike through a state park, like the famous Glen Creek Gorge Trail in Watkins Glen State Park. Part of the Finger Lakes region, this truly is a hike like no other, with stunning water features and rock formations, but its narrow nature means that crowds can feel especially overwhelming. Perhaps you’re looking for something a bit less crowded, but no less beautiful? Why not visit the state forests that New York has to offer?

1. Tinker Falls Upper

Distance: 7.3 miles

Location: Morgan Hill State Forest

This loop trail is best known for its access to a charming waterfall and the cave just behind it, but there are also lookout points and other water features that offer great photo opportunities. Taking about three and a half hours to complete, the trail is considered moderately difficult. Hikers recommend bringing bug spray along.

2. Bear Swamp Yellow Loop Trail

Distance: 3.5 miles

Location: Bear Swamp State Forest

Open all year, this forest hike shines in all seasons, with meadows of spring flowers, summers that bring newts to the streams, fiery fall foliage, and trails that transform for winter sports. Taking just under an hour and a half to complete, the loop trail is quite peaceful and lovely.

3. Little Rock City Nature Loop Trail

Distance: 0.7 miles

Location: Rock City State Forest

The shortest hike on this list (taking only fifteen minutes) is also one of the most unique. Large rocks are arranged in such a way that it appears to be a “rock city.” As one walks through these passageways between the rocks, the forest around makes the experience feel almost fantasy-like.

4. Fellows Hill Trail

Distance: 3.3 miles

Location: Morgan Hill State Forest

A dynamic forest trail that passes by a pond and waterfall, this area is popular for birding and for winter activities alongside hiking. This loop hike takes about an hour and a half to complete, with hikers noting that this time can change due to downed trees.

5. Stewart State Forest Foot Trail

Distance: 6.9 miles

Location: Stewart State Forest

A remote, peaceful hike that takes about two and a half hours to complete, this trail winds through the woods and passes streams. Although it can be used at any time of the year, hikers recommend visiting in dry weather and during the autumn to see some truly excellent fall foliage.

6. Orchard, Drakes, Windsor, and Camp Trail Loop

Distance: 6 miles

Location: Stewart State Forest

Taking two hours to complete, this is one of the more multi-use forest hikes on this list, with the loop trail used by hikers and runners alike, but most enjoyed by mountain bikers. Hikers and bikers alike will warn travelers that this area is also popular for hunting, so wearing bright colors is recommended.
