When we think of the Buffalo area's most impressive natural wonders, Niagara Falls comes to mind. And while living near the unofficial 8th world wonder is impressive, there are also plenty of other stunning natural sights to see. If you have yet to experience Panama Rocks Scenic Park, make this the year you see it for yourself.
Panama Rocks Scenic Park is located about 85 miles from Buffalo. It's a nice, easy drive with a beautiful reward.
This enchanting park is full of towering rocks, deep crevices, caves, and passageways to explore. It feels like entering another world.
Panama Rocks was established as a privately operated park in 1885, the same year that Niagara Falls State Park was founded. The formations here were once believed to be sacred to the Erielhonan (Eriez) people.
As you can probably guess, these aren't just any old rocks.
These are rumored to be the most extensive formations of glacier-cut ocean-quartz conglomerate in the world, forming a ridge that is half a mile long. Their history dates back about 400 to 350 million years to the Devonian period.
During the Devonian period, animal life was just emerging from the seas and the first forests were spreading over the planet. Whether or not you're into geology, to see rock formations this old is pretty amazing.
As the terrain is rocky and the formations can be slippery, it is highly recommended that visitors wear sturdy footwear. Keep a close eye on children and use caution when climbing around.
Above all else, explore this natural wonder mindfully and leave no trace behind - we want to preserve this enchanting place so it can be enjoyed by everyone. And don't forget to bring your camera along - this place is picture-perfect!
You'll find Panama Rocks Scenic Park at 11 Rock Hill Rd., Panama, NY 14767. The park is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. from early May until late October. Admission is just $7.50, or you can opt for a season pass for $15 so you can return again and again. There are a lot of fun things to do here, so it's well worth it!
